It’s hard to even begin to explain the significance of this without writing a novel, but I’ll have to try anyway. I can still barely comprehend the reality of “I became best friends with my favorite artist and now we’ve made a record together,” but that’s what this is. Years ago when the music of bvdub found me, it was an immediate understanding, unlike anything I’ve experienced since I went to my first rave in the 90s and knew instantly where I belonged. He changed the way I perceive music, and not a single day has passed since then where I haven’t listened to something of his (I don’t mind how insane that sounds).
In March 2020, I sent him a message, and his response led to the exchange of near-daily email diatribes about our similar rave-DJ-turned-ambienteer(ish) histories. One day he said “send me vocals and I’ll build around them,” and despite abject terror, I trusted him, so I did.
This record is the sound of us dragging each other out of hell again and again, a depiction of our friendship. Now you all bear witness to the most significant and terrifying thing I’ve ever done. And there is much, much more that I could say. Instead, I'll just let you all experience it with me as you listen.
Thank you Brock, for changing my life. And thank you Katsuyuki and AY, who lovingly manufactured the physical media 100% in Japan, and also to our family at Past Inside the Present for making this a true collaborative venture. I will never be the same.
